    A Delta
-shaped communication badge prop as seen in sci-fi adventure series Star Trek: The Next Generation (Paramount Television, 1987-1994).Made of cast resin with a hook-and-loop patch on the back, this silver- and gold-painted badge was meant to be worn on the left breast of a Starfleet uniform. This type of badge was used (in-universe) from the 2350s to 2360s, replacing the metal insignia pins of the Original Series films, which themselves replaced the sewn-on mission insignias unique to each vessel during the 2250s and 2260s, the era when Captain James T. Kirk commanded the U.S.S. Enterprise on its five year mission. In reality, as Star Trek moved from a weekly 1960s television show to a 1970s and 1980s film franchise, the cheap fabric mission patches were phased out and high-quality movie props were phased in, with the in-story explanation being that the Enterprise's delta insignia was adopted fleet-wide. When Star Trek returned to television with The Next Generation , hundreds of badges had to be mass produced, and communicators - once the size of a hand held radio in Star Trek: The Original Series (Paramount Television, 1966 1969) - had to evolve. The two were fused in the form of these combadges.2 by 2 inches.
